For a fourth year in a row, JPSS is the #1 school in the Pallisa District! A celebration parade was organized through the town of Pallisa – see our students, teachers and parents celebrating this success below. And, these are results put JPSS on par with much larger, urban schools. In fact, JPSS is now in the top 8% of secondary schools in the nation! Musibikha Winnie: A Hungerford Success Story
In her primary school leaving exams, local Musibikha Winnie earned the lowest possible passing score to continue into secondary school, placing her at the very bottom of Division 3. Recognizing her determination and potential, her primary school headteacher personally recommended her to Headteacher Bwayo Moses for the Hungerford Scholarship so she could benefit from its supportive boarding program. Living on campus gave Winnie the stability to focus fully on her education, surrounded by the comradery of fellow boarding students who encouraged and motivated one another. She gained access to structured routines, before- and after-class tutoring, and mentorship from older Hungerford scholars. Holiday programs held between school terms ensured continuous learning…

JPSS University Scholarship Update
The first year of our University Scholarship program has come to a successful close with the completion of classes and finals by our first 4 beneficiaries. We’re happy to report that Bruno, Silver, Meridah and Joshua all performed well in academics and with the help of our mentor Sharon, made a smooth transition into University life. Outside of classes, they’ve participated in groups and church activities including sports, church choir, church sacristan, Bamasaba (tribe) association, and the debate club. Mentor Khabuya Sharon visits the students while they are at campus. The scholars and their parents/guardians are meeting at JPSS before the beginning of the next semester to share experiences and…

The Hungerford Scholarship: Changing the Future for Rural Uganda
John Paul Secondary School has long been a beacon of hope and opportunity for students in the Pallisa District. One of the key initiatives that have contributed to this growth and success is the Hungerford Scholarship Program. “Sue and I support many charities but without question, John Paul School is one of our favorites! Besides being a wonderful cause, you get so much value for your dollar! For the equivalent of $250 a year you can give a child a great education. Imagine that! For $250 a year you can help to break the chains of poverty with the promise of a bright future . . . and forever change…

Welcome Back to all of our Students!!
On February 3, 2025, John Paul Secondary School opened its doors to students, eager to return to their studies and see their friends again after their two-month end-of-year break. Moses Bwayo, the Headmaster, and all the teachers warmly greeted them. When our students return to school after a long break, it’s much like moving back into a college dorm. They must bring all their clothing and personal items in one trunk, plus they bring their mattresses, linens, and mosquito netting. The students are accompanied by their parents or guardians, who take them to school by bus or car and sometimes by boda-boda. You can only imagine the activity on…

Thanks to You – a Balanced Diet!
In the U.S., the quality and nutritional value of the school lunches provided in both public and private schools is top of mind. U.S. students are provided nutritionally balanced meals, fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and many cuisine and flavor options at each meal. In Uganda, the standard in all schools for the main meals of lunch and dinner is Posho and Beans. Posho is a nutritious food that forms the backbone of the East African diet. It is predominantly made from maize flour, which is a good source of carbohydrates, providing the energy needed for the day-to-day activities of an active society. Posho contributes to a well-rounded intake…

Where Are They Now?
We are often asked what happens to our students after they finish their studies at John Paul Secondary School. JPSS began offering A-level classes with our first S-5 class in 2019 and first S-6 class in 2020. Successful completion of these classes and adequate scoring on the UACE exam allows our graduates to continue their education at University, technical school and other tertiary institutions. Prior to this, we unfortunately didn’t have the means to stay in touch with our students as they attended A level classes at a different secondary school. But now, once our graduates complete their testing, we know the path they hope to follow. Much depends on…
