Every day, to more than 600 students, John Paul Secondary School opens the door to opportunity . . . to advanced learning . . . to moral guidance . . . and to hope. Let’s follow the path of these young students for a day.

“Being a student at John Paul Secondary School to me means an extraordinary opportunity to translate a dream into a reality.”

– John Paul Secondary School Student

6:00am

School begins early with Mass held in St. John Baptist Church on the campus grounds. Along with religious education, Christian values, integrity and discipline are embedded in their studies and behavior expectations. Prior to lessons, students are responsible for keeping their dorms orderly and the school compound uncluttered.

7:20am

After Assembly, lessons begin and the students disperse according to their grade.
The school curriculum is based on the British education system. John Paul School is accredited for “O” and “A” Level syllabus. Ordinary Level consists of four years of education (S-1 to S-4.) Advanced Level consists of two years (S-5 and S-6) college preparatory classes.

Students in S-1 to S4 study English, Literature, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, Biology, Computers and Agriculture among other topics.

While a student is in the “O” level, a teacher’s ability to see beyond an ordinary learner is critical. JPSS teachers are selected, in part, for their ability to assess each student’s potential and then engage him or her to achieve his or her highest potential.

S-5 and S-6 have more advanced studies in all the Sciences, Physics, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Languages, Fine Arts, among others.

These young adults realize that in order to go to University, it is necessary for a student to complete “O” and “A” levels.

10:00am

A half-hour break gives the young people time to pause and share

Throughout the day, there are computer classes for both O and A level students.

1:00pm

Lunch is served mid-day and, no denying, the students are ready!

Afternoon classes go on until 4:40 pm.

4:40pm

School’s out! Like all youth, JPSS students are engaged in extracurricular activities, including sports, dance and business.

Since students come from different cultural settings, the school encourages – and rewards – different cultural performances during school functions.

The EDUCATE! Program encourages members to “start” a business on campus, as part of entrepreneurship.

6:30pm

Supper is at 6:30. . . and then “Prep” or Study. But it’s not all work . . .

“Attending John Paul Secondary School is a life-changing opportunity for a Ugandan student because of its enriched academic, religious and cultural diversity. These young students realize the opportunity they are being given. All around them is poverty . . . a quality education is the door to university studies and the realization of a career – whatever it may be.”
