Welcome the Students Back to JPSS

The Dream Continues….

After a very long 22 months of no education in Uganda, the students at John Paul Secondary School were finally able to return to the classroom on January 10, 2022!  And, we are thrilled to report that the students returned in record numbers . . . over 600 of them!  The most critical factor in a quality education is qualified, caring teachers who mentor as well as instruct.  Throughout the pandemic, we continued to pay our valued teachers. We will continue this practice and increase their ranks to 41 teachers to narrow the student-teacher ratio in order to bridge the gap in their academic studies.

The Faculty and Students alike are Excited to get Back to Teaching and Learning

Fr. John Chrysostom, Administrator, Mr. Moses Bwayo, Head Master, and all the teachers were there to welcome each student back.  It is our Promise to help them strive to reach their potential and have a chance for a better life as they continue their quest for a quality education.

The students are facing many challenges that were caused by the pandemic, not only educationally but psychologically.  Therefore, our teachers will be helping the students in all areas…. educationally, psychologically and spiritually.

Maintenance and Updates of the Campus

We did not sit by idly during the lock-down and your continued support was evident immediately upon their return…They were very happy to see all the updates that were completed on the campus…. New floors in the classrooms and offices, new sidewalks and stairs at the school, improved and enlarged latrines, several new water tanks, classrooms were all painted inside and out plus refurbished blackboards and the addition of whiteboards.  New doors and window components for the classrooms were installed and a courtyard added to the girl’s dorm. A beautiful campus awaited them!

In addition, 60 computer workstations were purchased and installed plus a 60-foot-tall cell tower was erected on campus. This is the first time the students will be able to use the internet for their classes. These young people face a world that runs on technology. Expansion of the computer/software capacity and installation of internet capability is one of the most advantageous of our projects—opening our students’ perspective worldwide.

2022 is a year of opportunity but also a year of challenge for John Paul School.  We have very ambitious plans that include major construction projects plus servicing the needs of an ever-growing population of students and staff. Here are how your contributions will continue to support those efforts.

Supplies and Textbooks

John Paul Secondary School continues to rise in the rankings of “Best Performing in Science” school. This requires well-supplied chemistry, and biology labs which enable practical application of scientific theories. As we continue to grow an ongoing objective—and challenge—is providing every student an updated textbook for each subject.

Supporting the Hungerford Scholars …. Children from the village of Chelekura are selected by academic achievement during their years at primary school. Improving the community, one child at a time, one family at a time, is taking place through this scholarship program funded by Dr. Larry and Sue Hungerford.

Multi-Purpose Building     Our most ambitious project for this year directly affects student welfare. From the inception of the school, students have picked up their meals from the outside kitchen and found a spot on the school grounds to eat. The construction and furnishing of a Multi-Purpose building would enable students to eat their meal in two shifts. Additionally, there would be numerous other uses for this facility:  assembly and social hall, certified testing center, staged music and dramatic performances, PTA, faculty and student meeting center, Board of Governors and school related meetings, private study, classroom and faculty space. Furthermore, the school might consider renting the facility for business meetings and exhibitions.

We can’t thank you, our donors and supporters, enough for your continued help. We realize so many have struggled during this pandemic but even through all this, you’ve reached out to make a difference for our students in Uganda. Because of YOUR generosity, we are confident our dedicated students, teachers and administration will succeed!
